Prada Rong Zhai: Getting Inside Shanghai's Most Beautiful Mansion
Kora books this for you
Rong Zhai is the house every architecture lover in Shanghai whispers about: a 1918 garden mansion with stained-glass ceilings, carved teak, and a tiled sunroom that photographs like a dream. Prada spent six years restoring it. The problem for international visitors: getting inside runs through a Chinese-only mini-program that foreign visitors, by default, simply can't use. It's exactly the kind of door Kora exists to open — we book it for you, no WeChat involved.

The house
Rong Zhai was the home of Rong Zongjing, the "flour king" of Republican-era China, and it's widely considered the best-preserved garden mansion of early-1900s Shanghai. Prada's restoration — led with Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi and finished in 2017 — brought back the stained-glass ceilings, the carved woodwork, and the sunroom's original tiles piece by piece.
Since 2025 the second floor houses Mi Shang (迷上, "Milan–Shanghai"), Prada's first standalone dining space in Asia, with interiors by film director Wong Kar-wai — moody, mirrored, very In-the-Mood-for-Love. It's listed in the Michelin Guide Shanghai.
This summer's program
Since July 6, 2026, the house runs a weekday "architecture and dining" experience — a guided tour of the mansion paired with a meal moment. Three sessions:
| Session | Time (Mon–Fri) | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast Hour | 10:00–12:00 | ¥288 | Bespoke breakfast + guided architecture tour |
| Afternoon Hour | 14:00–15:00 | ¥388 | Tour + chocolate & nut gift box |
| Dusk Hour | 17:00–19:00 | ¥268 | Tour + signature cocktail |
Sessions are small-group and weekday-only, which keeps the house quiet — the dusk session with a cocktail in the garden is the one to want. There's no standalone "just look around" ticket: you get inside via an experience or by dining.
The booking wall — and the way through it
The experiences are booked through a Chinese mini-program: Chinese interface, Chinese account expected, no English booking page. By default, foreign visitors don't have access to that system at all — which is why so many travelers photograph Rong Zhai's gate and never see the stained glass.
This is Kora's home turf. Kora has its own channel for Rong Zhai reservations — both the tour experiences and a table at Mi Shang. Tell Kora in chat:
- Which day and session you want (or that you'd like dinner at Mi Shang instead)
- How many people, and that you'd like English accommodated
The booking is handled on the Chinese side and confirmed back to you in chat. No WeChat, no Chinese phone number, no mini-program — you just show up with your passport.
FAQ
Can I visit Rong Zhai without booking anything?
Not currently. Entry is via the summer experiences or a Mi Shang reservation. When Prada stages public exhibitions here (it does, periodically), open-entry days come back — ask Kora what's current.
Is the tour in English?
Sessions are led primarily in Chinese; guides can usually accommodate English speakers. Flag it when booking — if you book through Kora, we flag it for you.
Weekend visits?
The summer experiences run weekdays only. On weekends, a Mi Shang dining reservation is the way in — Kora books that too.
How far ahead should I book?
Sessions are small; 3–5 days ahead is safe, more for Friday dusk slots.
Want in? Tell Kora your date and preferred session — the booking gets handled, you get a confirmation in chat.
