The parks note lists Tianfu Art Park among Chengdu's free essentials, and it's the most ambitious of them: a purpose-built culture district in the north-west of the city where three landmark buildings face each other across a lotus lake — the Tianfu Art Museum, its roofline spread like a ginkgo leaf on the water; the Chengdu Contemporary Art Museum; and the Tianfu Humanities and Arts Library, built as a range of white book-mountains.
Everything is free. The museums have carried surprisingly heavy programming since opening — from Chinese modern masters to international loans — and the library is worth entering for the interior alone, terraced like a valley of reading steps. In July the lotus is up, which is when the local notes shoot it.

Why locals rate it
Because it's a world-class culture cluster with a picnic lawn attached, and none of it costs anything. Locals treat it as a full free day: exhibition in the morning, lotus lake at noon, library until the light goes golden on the white roofs. It's also refreshingly uncrowded compared to the panda-and-Kuanzhai circuit — this is where the city itself goes.
