Both of our Suzhou itinerary notes route through Pingjiang Road, and both quote the same line: "one Pingjiang Road, half of old Suzhou." It earns the epithet on paperwork alone — the street and its parallel canal appear, in the same position, on the Pingjiang Map carved in stone in 1229, making this roughly 800 years of unmoved urban plan.
What you walk today is about a kilometre of flagstones between whitewashed houses, crossed by humpback bridges, with gondola-style boats poling the canal and the sound of pingtan — Suzhou's sung storytelling — drifting out of teahouses. It's free, never closes, and sits one lane south of the Suzhou Museum and the Humble Administrator's Garden, which is why every first visit ends up here anyway.

Why locals rate it
Because it's the old city doing what the old city does, without a ticket gate. The notes treat it as connective tissue — the walk between garden reservations, the evening decompression after a museum slot — which is exactly how locals use it. The side lanes are the upgrade: Daru Lane, Niujia Lane and the alleys east of the canal empty out fast and keep the same architecture.
- Walk it twice — daylight for the bridges and boats, after 19:00 for lanterns and thinner crowds. The day-trippers are back on trains to Shanghai by then.
- Duck into a teahouse for pingtan rather than a ticketed show — a pot of tea and an hour of ballads is the local version.
- The north end is the launchpad: Suzhou Museum, the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lion Grove are all within ten minutes' walk — book those slots first, then let the lane fill the gaps.
Around it
Ten minutes' walk south is the Twin Pagoda Market for breakfast-to-coffee; the museum-and-garden cluster is directly north (booking rules on the Suzhou local map). For the other great canal street, Shantang Street runs the same trick at seven times the length.
