Our note calls Twin Pagoda Market "the internet-famous vegetable market" — a phrase that shouldn't exist and in Suzhou does. The building started life in 1998 as the Shuangta neighbourhood wet market. In 2019 the TV programme Dream Home Makeover and designer Shen Lei rebuilt it: walls opened up, entrances multiplied, stalls re-clad with motifs from Suzhou's huama numerals and Taohuawu woodblock prints.
Crucially, it kept its job. Mornings are real: vegetables, tofu, river fish, aunties comparing prices. Around the produce run the additions — noodle and wonton stalls, Suzhou snacks, a coffee counter, and the locksmith and tailor the renovation deliberately kept. It's named for the twin Song-dynasty pagodas standing in a quiet courtyard a street away.

Why locals rate it
Because it solved a problem every city has — old market, ageing building, rising rents — without evicting the market. The renovation became a national model for old-market renewal, but locals rate it for breakfast: noodles and shengjian at the cooked-food stalls, then coffee, all inside a building that still smells correctly of greens and river fish.
- Go hungry, go early — the cooked-food stalls are a legitimate Suzhou breakfast circuit, and the produce hall is at full theatre before 9:00.
- Find the actual twin pagodas — the Song-dynasty pair (Luohanyuan Twin Pagodas) stand in a small ticketed courtyard nearby that almost nobody enters; the market borrowed their name, the courtyard kept the quiet.
- Cash is not needed but small patience is — stalls are QR-payment first; have Alipay ready rather than waving notes.
