Shantang Street (山塘街): Seven Li From the City Gate to Tiger Hill

Both itinerary notes put Shantang Street in the evening slot, and one is blunt about why: after the lanterns come on, "you step straight back into the old Jiangnan dream." The street is Suzhou's other great canal lane — and the older one. It was laid out in 825 CE when the poet-governor Bai Juyi had a canal dug from Changmen Gate to Tiger Hill, with the spoil banked into a street beside it.
The full run is "seven li" — about 4.5 km — and most of it is still ordinary neighbourhood: laundry, small shops, old men with birdcages. The polished, lantern-hung stretch near Changmen is where visitors concentrate, and where the boats go from. Walking is free at any hour; the further you go toward Tiger Hill, the more the street belongs to the people who live on it.

Why locals rate it
Because it's a functioning piece of the water town, not a reconstruction of one — the canal, the whitewashed houses and the humpback bridges have been doing this for twelve centuries. The notes' advice converges on timing: come at dusk, let the lanterns come on over the water, and take the boat if you take it at night.
- The crowds die at the first bridge — 90% of visitors stay within 500 m of the Changmen entrance. Keep walking and the same street turns local within minutes.
- The whole street points at Tiger Hill — walk (or boat) the full seven li and you arrive at the leaning pagoda's gate; it's the classic approach, and the reason the street exists.
- Night boat over day boat — the canal is at its best doubled in lantern light, and the queue is shorter after 20:00.
