Chengdu 339 (成都339): The Tower You Shoot From the Street

Our megastructure note — a photographer's tour of China's most overwhelming built objects — gives Chengdu one entry: the Sichuan Radio & TV Tower, which everyone calls 339 for its 339 metres, the tallest structure in western China. The prescribed shot isn't from the tower. It's from Xinhong Road 新鸿路, a plain residential street to the north-east, where a long lens compresses the tower until it fills the sky above the noodle shops.

The tower stands in Mengzhuiwan, a bend of the Jin river that the city renovated into one of its best riverside strolls — boardwalks, open-air teahouses, and a giant reclining panda sculpture at the tower's foot that mirrors the climbing one on the IFS mall downtown.

Why locals rate it

Because the tower reads best from below — the BDO effect, as the note puts it: a Big Dumb Object that shrinks the street beneath it to miniature. Xinhong Road is the canonical angle precisely because it's ordinary: power lines, plane trees, dumpling shops, and then a third of a kilometre of tower where the sky should be. After the shot, the Mengzhuiwan riverside below is where the neighbourhood actually spends its evenings.
