Three separate local notes name the Gate of the East — more than any garden. One is a photographer's pilgrimage list of China's most overwhelming megastructures; the others fold it into Jinji Lake evening walks. Either way the instruction is the same: don't go up it, walk away from it, turn around, and shoot.
The building is a 301.8-metre arch — two towers joined at the top, straddling the axis of Suzhou's modern lake district the way the old city's gates straddle its canals. Locals long ago nicknamed it "the big trousers"; the name stuck precisely because everyone photographs it. The lakeshore it commands is free, open all hours, and at its best in the hour before sunset.

Why locals rate it
Because it photographs like science fiction and costs nothing. The megastructure note that put it on our list shoots it with a 70–200 mm lens from across the water, compressing the arch against the lake until people in the frame shrink to punctuation. The evening-walk notes use it differently — as the golden backdrop the whole Jinji Lake shoreline arranges itself around at sunset, doubled in the water.
- The long-lens angle is from the east shore — take Line 1 one stop to Xinghai Square 星海广场 side or walk the lake path and shoot back west; sunset puts the light behind you.
- For the arch-plus-reflection shot without a long lens, the lakeside boardwalk directly east of the tower works on any phone — go 30–60 minutes before sunset.
- Friday and Saturday evenings add the Jinji Lake musical fountain near the west shore — check locally, schedules shift with season and weather.
Around it
