The famous silhouette is the East and West Pagodas — Zhenguo Pagoda at 48.24 m and Renshou Pagoda at 44.06 m — the tallest pair of stone pagodas in China, rebuilt in granite in the Song dynasty and carved tier upon tier with guardians and bodhisattvas. They've survived earthquakes that levelled everything around them. Between them spreads a working monastery: banyan courtyards, the great Mahavira Hall with its flying apsara brackets, and a museum wing holding a Song-dynasty seagoing junk excavated from the old harbour.

Why locals rate it
Because it's a live temple, not a monument — morning chanting, incense, neighbourhood grandmothers on the benches under the banyans. The note's timing advice holds: 6:30–8:00 is the monastery's own hour, and 16:00 onward gives the pagodas their soft light. In 2021 UNESCO inscribed "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song–Yuan China" across 22 sites; this is the one that makes the case in a single courtyard.
