Chengtian Temple (承天寺): The Quiet One of the Three Monasteries

The must-go note pairs Kaiyuan with Chengtian Temple and calls it the clear-the-head stop — one of Quanzhou's "three great forest monasteries" alongside Kaiyuan and Chongfu, at perhaps a twentieth of the foot traffic. Founded in the 10th century and also called Yuetai — "Moon Terrace" — it announces itself with the old town's best entrance: a long walled lane off Nanjun Road lined with small stone pagodas, leading you out of traffic noise into banyan shade.
It's free, open 8:00–17:30, and inescapably associated with Master Hongyi (Li Shutong) — the celebrated artist, musician and calligrapher who became one of modern China's most revered monks and spent his final years in Quanzhou, staying and teaching here before his death in 1942. His presence is the temple's tone: calligraphy, quiet, restraint.

Why locals rate it
Because it's the difference between visiting a temple and being in one. Kaiyuan draws the tour flags; Chengtian gets neighbourhood regulars, cats on warm stone, and the occasional calligraphy student copying Hongyi. The note's framing — half the city is incense — lands hardest here, where you can hear it.
- The entrance lane is the photograph — the row of small stone pagodas along the whitewashed wall, best in slanting morning or late light.
- Look for Hongyi's traces — his calligraphy and memorial spaces reward the walk to the rear courtyards, which most visitors never reach.
- Vegetarian food nearby — the lanes around Nanjun Road hide small Buddhist vegetarian kitchens; ask Kora for the current pick, the shops rotate.
