Canton Tower (广州塔): Sunset From 488 Metres

Mentioned in 1 local noteEnglish tickets online

Our itinerary note saves the tower for the day's last light, and that timing is the whole trick: go up around 17:30, says the author, and you get "sunset pouring over the Pearl River, then the neon of Zhujiang New Town switching on" — two skylines for one ticket.

The Canton Tower is Guangzhou's icon by a distance: 600 metres of twisted lattice (454 m of tower, 146 m of mast), opened for the 2010 Asian Games, with an indoor deck at 433 m and — when it opened, the world's highest — an outdoor deck at 488 m.

Why locals rate it — and how to time it

Locals mostly photograph the tower rather than climb it — the free shot is from Haixinsha island or the opposite bank at blue hour, when the lattice runs through its colour cycle. But when they do go up, they go at dusk, and the note is emphatic about the order: sunset first from the 433 m deck, then the outdoor 488 m ring after dark if the weather's kind.

The Bubble Tram — glass pods riding the tower's rim — is the add-on that earns its price at night; the Sky Drop is for people who want their skyline with adrenaline.

Only Kora will tell you
  • The official site has a real English checkout (cantontower.com) — one of the few China attractions where your foreign card works directly. Book dusk slots a day or two out.
  • Haze days waste the ticket: if you can't see the tower's top from the ground, don't buy. Ask Kora for a same-day visibility check.
  • The free alternative: the north-bank riverside walk between the bridges gives the postcard angle for nothing — locals shoot from there.

Around it

Across the river is Zhujiang New Town's museum row and the CBD's evening skyline. Pair the tower with an old-city day — the granite cathedral, Dongshankou's villas — and let this be the finale. The full ranked list is on the Guangzhou local map.
