ART021 and Shanghai Art Week: November’s big art moment

If you care about contemporary art and you can pick your Shanghai dates, pick November. That’s when ART021 (上海廿一当代艺术博览会) — the fair widely read as the bellwether of China’s art market — fills the Shanghai Exhibition Center, a gloriously over-the-top Sino-Soviet palace on Yan’an Road that’s worth the ticket by itself.

The 2026 edition is the fair’s 14th; November 11–14 has been reported, with official confirmation (and tickets) to come — recent editions ran Thursday–Sunday in mid-November. The 2025 fair drew ~140 galleries from 22 countries, from global blue-chips to the Chinese galleries defining the scene.

The week, not just the fair

• ART021 — Shanghai Exhibition Center: the social center of gravity; first day(s) are VIP preview, the weekend is public.
• West Bund Art & Design (西岸博览会) — the same week (November 10–15 reported) at the West Bund Art Center: airier, design-inflected, on the museum mile.
• Everything else lights up — museums time major openings to the fairs, galleries run late nights, and the whole contemporary art circuit peaks. Locals call it Shanghai Art Week.

Tickets and tactics

• Buying: official sales run through ART021’s WeChat channels closer to the date (a full-run pass has been listed around ¥400; single-day tickets cheaper). English-friendly listings have appeared on international platforms in past years.
• Timing: public weekend days get dense after noon — go at opening. VIP previews are the calm, collector-heavy sessions; access is by invitation or higher-tier passes.
• Pairing: both fairs plus two museums is a comfortable two-day program; the West Bund side stacks perfectly with the museum mile.
