Dongjiaomin Xiang (东交民巷): Beijing's Longest Hutong Speaks French

Mentioned in 2 local notesWalk-in · free street

Two of our walking notes open their Beijing day on the same street, and it isn't one the tour buses use. Dongjiaomin Xiang is, at about 1,552 metres, the longest hutong in the city — and from 1861 to the mid-20th century it was the Legation Quarter, where eleven foreign powers kept their embassies, banks and post offices.

What's left is the strangest architecture walk in Beijing: Gothic church spires over grey hutong walls, legation gatehouses beside bicycle repair stands. One note calls the mash-up "the most photogenic street in the city" — and files it before nine in the morning, when the light comes down the lane lengthwise.

Why locals rate it

The walk both notes sketch, east to west: start at Chongwenmen, find St. Michael's Church — the Gothic Catholic church French missionaries raised in 1901, still holding mass — then pass the old Belgian legation, the French post office, and the China Court Museum in the former Japanese Specie Bank. One note adds a modern coda: the PANGEAISM concept store in its standalone wooden building, currently the street's photo magnet, with 福叁咖啡 for the coffee stop.

It reads as a museum, but it isn't one — people live here, laundry dries against legation walls, and that collision is the point.

Only Kora will tell you
  • Go before 9:00 or after 16:30. The street runs east–west, so early and late light travels straight down it — the hour both notes shoot in.
  • The church garden gate is often open even outside mass; step in quietly and the spire shot is yours without the fence.
  • Security posts dot the street (courts and government buildings share it). Cameras are fine on the street; just don't point them at the guarded compounds.

Around it

The west end drops you at Qianmen: continue into Qianmen Street and Dashilan, then thread through to Sanlihe Park and Yangmeizhu Xiejie — one note walks exactly this line as a single day. The full ranked list is on the Beijing local map.
