Suzhou Museum: I.M. Pei’s farewell to his hometown

When Suzhou asked its most famous son to design its museum, I.M. Pei was 85; the building opened when he was 89. He answered with a summary of everything: white walls and grey lines from Suzhou vernacular, glass-and-steel geometry from his modernist life, a lotus pond at the center, and — instead of a landscape painting — a composition of sliced rocks arranged against a white wall, a mountain-scroll you walk past. The museum sits beside the Humble Administrator’s Garden, old and new Suzhou sharing one wall.

The collection inside is small and exquisite, led by two national treasures: the secret-color celadon lotus bowl — the glaze Tang poets called "borrowed from distant mountains" — and the Pearl Pillar reliquary, a Northern Song jewel-work pagoda.

This autumn is the museum’s biggest season in years:

• "Prosperous Suzhou" (姑苏繁华) — at the West branch through October 11: the 12-meter Qing scroll of Suzhou street life, home from Liaoning for the first time in 20 years, with 62 supporting masterworks.
• Xu Bing: Faking the True Garden — the contemporary master in dialogue with Pei’s building, main museum through October 22.
• Napoleon and the Era of French Transformation — 150 pieces at the West branch through October 25.

Note the pattern: everything closes mid-late October. This is a September-or-bust season.

Practical

• Free; closed Mondays; 9:00–17:00 (entry to 16:00). Real-name reservation on the WeChat mini-program up to 7 days ahead — the main (Pei) building is the tight ticket, with strict ±30-minute entry windows.
• The West branch (西馆) is a separate, larger building across town hosting the big loan shows.
• Suzhou is ~25 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail; the museum anchors the old-town day perfectly — Pingjiang Road’s canals start around the corner (see the Suzhou city page).
