Shanghai Museum: bronzes in Pudong, the Americas blockbuster downtown

The Shanghai Museum has long been the connoisseur’s pick among China’s great museums — the finest bronze and ceramic collections in the country, curated with restraint. Since 2024 its center of gravity is the vast East building in Pudong, and it comes with the friendliest entry policy of any major Chinese museum: free, no reservation — walk up and swipe your passport at the gate. Closed Tuesdays (not Mondays — the rare exception; plan accordingly).

Head straight for the bronze gallery and the Da Ke Ding, the 2,800-year-old tripod that anchors the collection, then let the ceramics floor rewrite what you think "china" means.

• The blockbuster is downtown: the People’s Square building hosts "On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas" — roughly 3,000 objects spanning Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Aztec and Inca, one of the largest Americas shows ever staged in Asia, running through November 2027. This one is paid and ticketed; overseas visitors can buy via Trip.com — the museum planned for foreign passports here.
• At the East building: the summer’s Qin dynasty epic has just closed; two majors are announced next — Silla gold treasures from Korea and Sakya Monastery relics from Tibet, both slated to open in the coming weeks (dates were still settling as we checked — ask us for the live status).

Planning notes

• The two buildings are 30–40 minutes apart across the river — treat them as separate outings.
• East building crowds peak 10:30–14:00; late afternoon is calm (open to 18:00, last entry 17:00).
• Pair the East building with Pudong’s skyline sights; pair People’s Square with the contemporary art circuit.
