Shaanxi History Museum: China’s hardest ticket, and the new hall that isn’t

Ask Chinese museum lovers which ticket is hardest to get and one answer dominates: the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an. It’s free, which doesn’t help — slots release on WeChat just 5 days ahead at 17:00 and vanish in seconds, because inside sits the loot of thirteen dynasties’ capital: the Hejiacun hoard of Tang gold and silver, the gilt dancing-horse wine flask, and the agate cup with a beast’s head — a national treasure barred by law from ever leaving the building.

In 2024 the museum opened a spectacular second campus north of the city: the Qin & Han Dynasties Museum (秦汉馆) — 1,500 relics, 90% never before displayed, telling the empire-founding centuries in a building worthy of them. The twist: no reservation needed — swipe your ID or passport at the gate and walk in, free. If the main museum defeats your dates, this is not a consolation prize; it’s arguably the better-designed visit.

And of course Xi’an’s headline act, the Terracotta Army, sits east of town with its own (much easier) official booking.

• Main museum: closed Mondays; long hours in season (8:30–19:00). The Tang mural gallery — polo matches and court ladies painted on tomb walls — has historically carried a small separate fee and rewards it richly.
• Foreign passports and the WeChat booking system remain an awkward pair; the museum handles foreigners partly through manual channels — exactly the kind of thing to delegate.
