Nails and lashes in China: better art, a third of the price
If you care about nails, China will spoil you for home. The standard here is not "gel color plus one accent finger" — it is hand-painted art as the default: miniature landscapes, chrome cat-eyes, 3D work, hyper-detailed characters, all executed by technicians who do this volume all day in a market that competes ferociously on skill.
Lash studios run on the same economics: meticulous single-lash extension work, at prices that read like typos to anyone used to Western salons.
What things cost (tier-1 cities)
| Service | What you get | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Gel manicure, solid color | Shaping, cuticle work, gel polish | ¥80–150 |
| Nail art | Hand-painted designs, chrome, ombré, 3D pieces | ¥150–400 |
| Elaborate custom sets | Send a reference photo, they will match or better it | ¥300–600 |
| Lash extensions, classic | Single-lash application, 60–90 min | ¥100–300 |
| Volume lashes | Fans, denser looks | ¥200–500 |
Prices step down fast outside Shanghai and Beijing — in Chengdu or Xi’an, knock a third off. No tipping, anywhere.
How it works
- Hours are glorious. Mall studios and street-level shops routinely run to 22:00, some later — nails after dinner is a normal plan.
- Walk-ins mostly work for solid-color sets at mall studios. The strong artists and elaborate work book out a day or two ahead.
- Reference photos are the language. Save what you want; technicians here reproduce from an image better than almost anywhere.
- Lash appointments are almost always booked, not walked into — allow 90 minutes and skip eye makeup that day.
The booking wall
The catch is the usual one: the whole industry lives inside Chinese local-services apps — studio pages, price lists, artist portfolios, appointment slots, discounted packages, all in Chinese, mostly requiring a Chinese account.
So do it the easy way: send KORA the photo and your hotel, and we book the right studio at the real local price — a confirmed slot, the address card for the taxi, and an artist whose portfolio actually matches what you asked for. (Doing a whole treat-yourself day? See the self-care run — massage, head spa and teeth cleaning stack beautifully around a nail appointment.)
