Eating late in China: a guide for people who dine at 10pm

Travelers from the eastern Mediterranean and Latin worlds hit the same wall in week one: you stroll out for dinner at 9:30pm, Barcelona-style, and the restaurant you wanted is stacking chairs. Chinese dinner culture runs early — families sit at 5:30–6:30, prime time is over by 8, and many traditional restaurants take last orders around 8:30–9.

Then something wonderful happens. Around 9–10pm, a second food economy switches on: 宵夜 (xiāoyè), the late-night eating culture — different venues, different dishes, different mood. You weren’t late for dinner. You were early for xiāoyè.

What’s open when the restaurants aren’t

Open lateWhat it isUntil
BBQ skewer joints (烧烤)The heart of xiāoyè: grilled lamb skewers, beer, plastic stools, loud friends2–4am
HotpotMany chains run very late; Haidilao locations are commonly 24h or near itlate/24h
Noodle & wonton shopsThe solo diner’s salvation in every citymidnight+

Geography matters: the south of China eats later than the north, and bigger cities eat later than smaller ones. Guangzhou, Changsha, Chongqing and Shenzhen are true late cities; Shanghai’s bistro streets hold weekend kitchens open to 10–11pm; Beijing outside nightlife zones goes quiet earlier.

Strategies for the 10pm diner

Or just ask

Opening hours in China live on Dianping and change weekly; English listings are chronically stale. At 10pm, message KORA with your location and appetite — we check what’s genuinely open and good right now, book or queue where needed, and send the address card for the taxi. The late-night city is the one locals love most; you just need the door.

It’s 10pm and we haven’t had dinner — find us somewhere good and open near here.
