Drinking well in China: cocktail temples, craft taprooms and ¥10 beer halls

File this under "things nobody tells you": in 2026, Asia’s best bar is in Guangzhou. Hope & Sesame — a neighborhood speakeasy that grew into a Cantonese-flavor cocktail laboratory — topped Asia’s 50 Best Bars, leading a record seven mainland entries: MO Bar and Obsidian in Shenzhen, Pony Up in Shanghai, Ralph’s Bar in Chengdu, Tiao in Beijing among them.

That’s the top of a pyramid with several distinct floors, each worth a night.

The ecology, floor by floor

Useful context: there’s no tipping, table minimums exist at flashy clubs but not at the bars above, and closing time runs 1–2am for cocktail bars, later for beer halls. For the electronic-music end of the night, cross over to the underground club map.

Getting in

The award bars book out (Hope & Sesame takes reservations days ahead; Shanghai speakeasies cap walk-ins), addresses are deliberately cryptic, and the current "it" bars rotate monthly on Chinese social media. KORA keeps the live map: tell us the city, the night and your taste — whisky nerd, natural wine, loud fun — and we book the seats and sequence the crawl in walking order.

Plan me a bar crawl tonight — one serious cocktail bar, one fun local spot, walkable.
